About us

Birdsong Ceramics

BirdSong Ceramics was started by Janette Nicholson on our smallholding in the lovely Birnamwood area in 2009.

We work from our converted stables with a wonderful view over our own “Lake District” and the KZN Midlands, with the majestic Drakensberg in the distance. With the family pets for company, our horses grazing in the fields and the constant background music of birdsong, it is an inspiring setting for creativity. Our team of three friendly and hardworking staff produce a huge amount of stock which Janette then checks and decorates before loading in the kiln and then finishing off ready for packing and sale.

The business started with a small range of slip cast terracotta birdfeeders and décor items that has grown greatly in variety and has since been extended to the lovely pastels range of products which have a popular “chalky-type” finish. We continuously add new products to our range or give a fresh new look to existing lines while some of the good old faithfuls have remained unchanged.

We supply  a great number of garden centers and gift shops throughout SA with our products and will also take orders for gifts or tokens for weddings, baby showers etc. New on the calendar are our pop up markets at our open days to be held over 3 weekends a year at Easter time, in Spring and before Christmas. These weekends allow for relaxed shopping of quality SA made products in a peaceful country setting with amazing views and with pony and tractor rides a possibility. In addition to our own ceramic  products we also source quality crafted SA products for these weekends.
